Dr. Faustino Bernadett is highlighting Clínica Tepati in this Nonprofit Spotlight. Located in Sacramento, California, Clínica Tepati was founded in 1974 and set out to address the healthcare gaps in the Latino community of the greater Sacramento area.
Although there have been advancements, this community remains socioeconomically disadvantaged and medically underserved.
According to the 2009 California Health Interview Survey, 27.3% of Latinos in Sacramento County live at or below the Federal Poverty Line and 15.8% have no health insurance at all. In addition, 21.1% report not having a regular source of healthcare to turn to when ill or in need of health advice. Clínica Tepati remains committed to addressing the unmet needs of this community and other underserved communities by providing quality, primary healthcare at no cost to our patients.
Clínica Tepati operates under a three-part mission of healthcare, education, and advocacy. Clínica Tepati provides basic healthcare services and health education to the underserved Latino community.
Undergraduate and medical students learn first-hand clinical experience in a respectful environment that fosters educational exchange and helps each student become a conscientious and compassionate individual. Additionally, Clínica Tepati provides both students and patients with positive Latino role models and mentors working as healthcare professionals. Finally, Clínica Tepati volunteers go beyond providing the standard of care by being advocates for recent immigrant patients, serving as both linguistic and cultural interpreters.
It is easy to get involved with Clínica Tepati and help them to achieve their mission. There are many volunteering opportunities and donated resources are always appreciated.
